What’s the role of Bad Boy Records in the case against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs?
Bad Boy Records has been synonymous with Diddy since the 1990s. The label, which is under Diddy’s Bad Boy Enterprise, is a foundation of Combs’ wealth and power. With its lucrative distribution deals and association with some of the biggest music companies in the world, Bad Boy has sold over 5billion records since its inception.
It was essential in R&B and hip-hop culture during the 1990s and early 2000s, as it birthed artists such as Biggie Smalls, Mary J Blige, and Usher. Presently, Bad Boy is also part of Combs Global, a company owned by Diddy that houses his entire portfolio, including his investments in music, fashion, fragrances, beverages, marketing, film, television, and media.
As such, Combs Global and Bad Boy hold a huge amount of authority in the entertainment industry, which, understandably, can lead to corruption and abuses of power. Furthermore, many of the allegations made against Diddy have involved not only the producer but also other staff at the record label.
One example is Joseph ‘Big Joe’ Sherman, a former bodyguard to the Bad Boy stars, who was named in a recent lawsuit by Thalia Graves. It is alleged that he aided and abetted Diddy in sexual abuse. There are many more examples of this in the multiple lawsuits filed against Diddy, where alleged accomplices were on the Bad Boy payroll at the time of the supposed crime.
Bad Boy is a huge part of the case against Diddy and is the common denominator of every case filed since November 2023. Each one implicitly suggests that Combs purposefully used narcotics as a way to coerce and control his artists and used his financial status as leverage and power within the industry to cajole his victims into keeping quiet.
Following his recent indictment last month, a grand jury highlighted how he was protected and defended after persuading “certain employees to carry out, facilitate, and cover up his abuse and commercial sex” in return for promotion within his various companies.
One producer who worked at Bad Boy Records, Rodney ‘Lil Rod’ Jones, filed a lawsuit in February alleging that he frequently groped him and showed him pornographic material. He also alleged that Diddy coerced him into having sexual relations with prostitutes, all with the suggestion that if he reported the action, he would not only be dropped from Bad Boy but blackballed in the music industry.
The success of Bad Boy and the financial power Diddy acquired with Combs Global made him a person of authority in the entertainment industry. His connection to figures such as Jay-Z, Russell Simmons, and Lucian Grainge allowed the Press Play creator to stop certain people from becoming successful, subsequently leading to a culture of fear and subservience.
Bad Boy was the Combs’ first business and is still the most significant part of his empire, which is why the company’s name and its employees consistently appear in the lawsuits filed against him. It has been, for all intents and purposes, a weapon.
