Azealia Banks ignites feud with Ice Spice

On June 25th, Ice Spice shared a new video on Instagram promoting her new single ‘Phat Butt’. The video shows the rapper posing for a photo shoot and rapping the lyrics. After the video was posted, Azealia Banks took to her social media to voice her disdain for it, saying that the shoot does not look aesthetically like the year 2000, which is what Ice Spice named her album Y2K after.

The official countdown for the release of Ice Spice’s album started earlier in June, as she set a summer release date of July 26th. This will be the rapper’s first full-length LP since she went viral with ‘Munch’. The name of her album title, Y2K, is likely a reference to her date of birth, January 1st 2000; however, Azealia Banks isn’t happy with the contradiction between title and look.

Banks posted on social media, “Somebody needs to tell @icespice Absolutely nothing about this aesthetically, performance wise, production wise is Y2K at all… This is like VIM early Nicki Minaj pack weave shit.”

Banks continued to advise Ice Spice on how she could improve her look so that it fits the turn-of-the-millennia look a bit more. “We need a new hair colour and a new facial expression,” she said before continuing, “Ice I love you down but you should put the halt button, drop David LaChapelle and re do this. Big butts and BBL bodies are the antithesis of Y2K.”

To back up her claims, Banks took to social media once again to share photos of female artists from the Y2K era. These included pictures of Aaliyah, TLC, and Jennifer Lopez.

As stated above, while Banks might have a point about the aesthetics not matching the album title, Ice Spice has likely named the album as such because it coincides with her birth date. In that case, Y2K would refer to her as a person rather than the aesthetic that she is trying to carry out.

It’s not unusual for Azaelia Banks to take time out of her day to criticise various rappers. Just this year alone, she has spoken out against Nicki Minaj, saying that she’s broke, and Jay Z for ruining Beyoncé’s country album rollout. She has also dissed Kendrick Lamar and Doechii.
