A$AP Rocky reveals what he learned at Virgil Abloh’s funeral: “It wasn’t easy”

A$AP Rocky has reflected on Virgil Abloh’s funeral years later.

Abloh, the founder of Off-White and former Artistic Director of menswear at Louis Vuitton, died in November 2021 at the age of 41.

Rocky had a close relationship with Abloh, with the creative working on his debut album Long Live A$AP and his music video for ‘Fashion Killa’.

During a recent interview with Vibe, Rocky revealed something he learned from attending Abloh’s funeral.

The Harlem rapper reflected on Abloh’s friends thanking his wife for “giving him to the world,” adding, “It wasn’t easy, because it’s almost like that doctor analogy. The doctor who’s a great doctor to all his patients is considered an absent parent. It’s about finding balance.”

He continued, “I learned something really interesting at Virgil’s funeral, just hearing how his friends thanked his wife in the front row for being so selfless. Nobody knew he had kids till he died. That’s fucking crazy.”

Abloh died following a battle with cancer. He’s survived by his wife, Shannon Abloh, and their two children, Lowe Abloh and Grey Abloh.

In a statement at the time of his death, his family wrote, “For over two years, Virgil valiantly battled a rare, aggressive form of cancer, cardiac angiosarcoma. He chose to endure his battle privately since his diagnosis in 2019, undergoing numerous challenging treatments, all while helming several significant institutions that span fashion, art, and culture.”

A private funeral was held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Abloh’s hometown of Chicago.

It was attended by Kanye West, Drake, Tyler, The Creator, Frank Ocean, Kid Cudi, Rihanna, Vic Mensa, Kendall Jenner, Don C, Jerry Lorenzo, Kim Kardashian, and many others.
