A$AP Rocky praises DaBaby: “One of the illest lyricists”
A$AP Rocky has given DaBaby his flowers for his abilities as a lyricist.
Fresh off the release of his new album, Don’t Be Dumb, Rocky gave a special mention to the North Carolina rapper.
During his appearance on The Questlove Show, Rocky opened up about working with DaBaby behind the scenes
“You know, I’m not really too keen on ghostwriters, but DaBaby is one of the first artists that I ever collaborated with on some bars, and he’s the last artist, too,” he said.
He added, “I guess I come from an era where that’s just a no, but when you block yourself from creating by having an ego and shit like that, that’s why you’re your own worst enemy. When I let my guard down, he was listening to me about how to produce. He produced his own first record.”
Rocky spoke more about his chemistry with DaBaby and how the ‘Suge’ rapper helped him overcome a difficult period of writing.
“He was like, ‘Yo bro, we really feed off each other’s energy,'” he recalled. “Shouts out to DaBaby, man. He’s one of the illest MCs and lyricists I know, man. I think writer’s block, when you put a powerful component in a room with you, it’ll help.”
He continued, “It doesn’t matter if you’re a novelist, a journalist, a poet, or a rapper, a lyricist, you put a cool motherfucker that you can bounce energy off of in the same room as you, you gon’ come up with something good. Trust me, man.”
This isn’t the first time Rocky has praised DaBaby. Speaking to Kerwin Frost in 2020, he said, “I like DaBaby’s videos. I like ‘Vibez’. You know his best one is ‘Bop’. I’m not gonna lie, DaBaby is my favourite right now. He make this music shit fun again.”
